Remote Online Notarization

The passing of Senate Bill 765 allows notarization to be done remotely online. This means a commissioned notary public can perfom notarial acts using audio/video technology from vendors meeting specific requirements. Remote Online Notarization (RON) also allows notaries from other states to perform notarial acts for Oregonians.

Required Training

Before beginning remote online notarization, it is important to uunderstand the process and ensure all requirements are being met.

The Secretary of State's office provides the required training thru an online video. This will provide you with the requirements and steps needed to perfom notarizations online.

Since each approved vendor or company's software is different, the vendor you select will provide training on how to use their platform.

Steps to becoming Remote Online Notary in Oregon

  1. Complete the required Remote Online Notarization Training.
  2. Complete the Remote Notarization Notice form.
  3. Email the completed form and a copy of your electronic stamp and signature generated by the vendor to notary-team.sos@sos.oregon.gov.
  4. The request will be reviewed to ensure all the requirements are met.
  5. An acknowledgment will be sent either approving or rejecting the request.
  6. Once the request is approved, you may begin remote notarizations.

Some Things to Remember

  • When you renew your commission, you will need to complete a new notice to continue to perform RON.
  • RON and IPEN (in-person electronic notarization) are not the same and there are two separate application processes if you want to notarize using both types of notarization. Learn more about IPEN.
  • Qualifying to perform RON doesn't automatically qualify you to perform IPEN (In-Person Electronic Notarization). This is a separate process.
  • The Notary must still be located in Oregon like traditional notarizations, but the signer can be located outside Oregon.
  • Your signature when performing RON must match the signature that you provided on your official oath of office.
